Fairytale Mashups: Unleash Your Inner Storyteller!

When Cinderella Met the Big Bad Wolf (and Things Got Complicated!)

Alright, fellow fairytale fanatics! Let’s face it, the classics are classic for a reason, but sometimes we need to shake things up. We here at Fairytales: ReImagined believe in the power of a well-told tale, but also the glorious potential for chaos when you start mixing those tales together.

That’s where fairytale mashups come in…fairytale style. Instead of sticking to a single storyline, imagine taking characters, settings, and plot points from *different* fairytales and smashing them together like a toddler with a bucket of building blocks. The result? A brand new story that’s familiar, yet utterly unique. (And possibly a little bit unhinged, but that’s half the fun.)

Why Mashups (Fairytale Edition)? Because the Drama!

Why limit yourself to just *one* villain, one princess, one happily-ever-after? Mashing up fairytales allows you to explore new conflicts, create unexpected alliances, and delve deeper into the themes that make these stories so enduring. It’s also a fantastic exercise in creative writing, forcing you to think outside the pumpkin carriage.

Plus, sometimes the original stories could use a little… tweaking. Maybe Sleeping Beauty needs a sassy fairy godmother from Cinderella to keep her awake, or perhaps Hansel and Gretel could use Snow White’s survival skills in the woods. Mashups let us address those little plot holes and character inconsistencies (not that we’re judging…much).

Some Ridiculous (and Possibly Brilliant) Mashup Ideas (Fairytale Style!):

  • Cinderella and the Three Bears: Instead of a prince, she stumbles upon a very peculiar cottage in the woods. Are the bears going to let her have her happy ending?
  • Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White: What if Snow White was at Grandma’s house instead of Red? How will the story change now?
  • Rapunzel and the Frog Prince: The witch has an enchanted pond, what will she make of the princess?
  • Jack and the Beanstalk and the Elves and the Shoemaker: What if Jack stole the golden goose and left the shoemaker a new pair of golden boots as a gift?
  • Goldilocks and the Seven Dwarfs: Some porridge is always available for the wanderer, but are these home invaders too much, even for Goldilocks?

See? The possibilities are even *more* endless than before! And again, some of these ideas are making us question our career choices. (But we’ll try to stay positive.)

But How Do You Actually *Do* a Fairytale-on-Fairytale Mashup?

Excellent question! Let’s break it down:

  1. Choose Your Fairytale Pairings: Which stories have complementary themes, conflicting characters, or interesting setting overlaps?
  2. Identify Core Story Elements: Pinpoint the key characters, settings, magical items, and plot points of each tale.
  3. Brainstorm the Collision: How would the characters react to each other? What challenges would they face in this blended world?
  4. Create the Conflict: Where’s the tension? Is it a clash of personalities, a magical rivalry, or a battle for survival?
  5. Twist the Familiar: Subvert expectations! Surprise readers with unexpected character arcs, plot twists, or thematic resolutions.
  6. Have Fun!: Don’t be afraid to get silly, embrace the unexpected, and let your imagination run wild.
